Supervisory Board Chair - Voorzitter Raad van Toezicht

Musicians Without Borders is looking for a Chair of the Supervisory Board to support our work around the world, transforming lives of people affected by war and armed conflict, and building a network of activist musicians creating social change through the power of music.

Musicians Without Borders is an international organization that uses the power of music to bridge divides, connect communities, and heal wounds of war. We implement projects, develop methodologies, organize training courses, and participate in international conferences around community building, reconciliation, and healing through music.

Musicians Without Borders currently runs projects located in the Western Balkans (Kosovo, North Macedonia, Bosnia and Herzegovina), the Middle East (Palestine, Jordan), East Africa (Rwanda, DRC/Congo), Central America (El Salvador), and with refugees in Europe.

Description of the Role

The Supervisory Board is responsible for supervising the development and execution of the vision, mission and strategy of Musicians Without Borders. They oversee engagement of the most important stakeholder groups, including donors, and supervise adequate risk management and finances of the organization. The Supervisory Board meets four times per year. For each meeting, you will receive documentation well in advance to prepare. In between meetings, the Executive Board/ Directormay ask you to act as advisor on specific topics related to your supervisory role (approx. 2-4 hours per month).

  • Providing leadership and direction to the supervisory board, ensuring that its activities align with MWB’s mission and strategic goals.
  • Facilitating effective communication and collaboration among board members.
  • Ensuring that MWB complies with relevant laws, regulations, and ethical standards.
  • Chairing board meetings, setting the agenda, and ensuring that discussions are focused on strategic issues.
  • Collaborating with the Director and providing support and guidance while maintaining a clear distinction between governance and management roles.
  • Participating in the recruitment, evaluation, and, if necessary, the replacement of the executive leadership.
  • Monitoring and managing risks, both financial and operational, to ensure MWB’s sustainable and responsible use of resources.
  • Representing MWB externally, building and maintaining relationships with donors, and the broader community.
  • Participating in the evaluation of the board’s performance and identifying areas for improvement.

Knowledge, skills and abilities

  • Desired experience in role of (Supervisory Board) chair;
  • Experience with/understanding of function of Supervisory Board (Raad van Toezicht), according to Netherlands law and practice;
  • Has a network in Dutch and international peace and human rights sectors;
  • Affinity and commitment to music/arts for social change;
  • Experience in/affinity with cultural diversity in organization and programs;
  • Flexible strategist, creative thinker;
  • Fluent in English and Dutch;
  • Available for regular contact with the Director.
