Community Music Training: Heek, Germany

November 24, 2025 @ 11:00 am - November 28, 2025 @ 1:30 pm CET

Musicians Without Borders , in collaboration with Landesmusikakademie NRW and the project IN.DI.E Musik, presents a 5-day Community Music Training course in Heek, Germany.

This training is designed for musicians, music educators, and community facilitators who want to expand their skills in using music as a tool for social inclusion, especially when working with people who have refugee or migration backgrounds. Grounded in Musicians Without Borders ’ internationally recognized methodology, the training introduces trauma-informed, inclusive approaches to music-making and community leadership.

Developed through years of experience in conflict and post-conflict regions, MWB’s approach fosters creativity, safety, and connection through music. Participants will explore MWB’s five core principles—safety, inclusion, equality, creativity, and quality—while gaining hands-on tools to apply in community and educational settings.

The training will be conducted in German. Any sessions led in English will be translated to ensure full accessibility for all participants.

This Community Music Training contributes to the broader aims of Musicians Without Borders and the IN.DI.E Musik project: to foster inclusion, resilience, and empowerment through accessible music practices. It offers a rich, immersive experience for those committed to using music for social change and connection.

While the training will be tailored to participant experience, core topics will include:

1. MWB’s five working principles: Safety, inclusion, equality, creativity, and quality—applied directly to music facilitation.

2. Community music methods in practice: Singing, body percussion, movement, and working in groups without the use of language.

3. The role of music and the nervous system: Biological, psychological, and social effects of music, and how it supports regulation and healing from trauma.

4. Creativity and co-creation: Using improvisation and spontaneous music-making to build connection and group cohesion.

5. Reflective practice: Tools for evaluation, feedback, and developing one’s facilitation style.

6. Practical application: Implementing learned techniques in schools, refugee centers, and community-based music projects.

We welcome applications from musicians, music educators, and volunteers working with refugees, migrants, or in inclusive arts settings. You may be just starting out in community music or have years of experience—the training is open to all levels.

Applicants should be open to creative collaboration and interested in learning trauma-informed, non-verbal, and inclusive facilitation practices.

The training will be delivered in German. Any segments led in English will be supported with translation. Activities will be adapted to the physical capacities of the group.

Please note: This training is officially recognized under the North Rhine-Westphalia Employee Training Act.
