Introductory Course

An introductory course to Musicians without Borders’ principles and methodology.

This course is an introduction to the 5 principles of our community music training methodology: Safety, Inclusion, Equality, Creativity, and Quality. We will cover diverse approaches to community music making, including body percussion, drumming, singing, movement, and songwriting.

Duration: 12 hour course | 2 days

Dates: July 27-28, 2018

Introductory Course Details

Goals:

  • Principles: The trainee will be introduced to the principles of Musicians without Borders.
  • Methodology: The trainee will experience the connection between the principles of Musicians without Borders and music activities.
  • Community: The trainee will experience the benefits of making music together.
  • Leadership: The trainee will gain skills that will allow them to further develop their leadership skills and run music workshops in their own communities.

Trainee Profile:

  • Has affinity for music.
  • Is leading or intends to lead activities with any group (classroom, community, workspace, etc.).
  • Has little or no experience leading community music workshops.

Schedule:

  • Day 1: Principles of MwB; Community Singing; Nonviolence; Trauma and Self-Care; Body Percussion and Drum Circle
  • Day 2: Motive for Motion; Group Songwriting; Creativity; Improvisation; Community Music Leadership

 

Training of Workshop Leaders

A practical course to expand the knowledge and skills in community music leadership based on Musicians without Borders’ principles and methodology.

This course deepens and expands the knowledge and skills in leading music workshops with groups of any size and age. We will understand the connection between music activities and the 5 principles of Musicians without Borders: Safety, Inclusion, Equality, Creativity, and Quality.

The course covers pedagogical, didactic and musical skills in order to apply the methodology in different situations and for diverse target groups. We will introduce our approach of nonviolence in our work. The course offers hands-on experience in leading activities, including body percussion, drumming, singing, movement, and songwriting.

Duration: 24 hour course | 4 days

Dates: July 29- August 1, 2018

Workshop Leader Course Details

Goals:

  • Methodology: The trainee will practice making the connection between the principles of Musicians without Borders and music activities.
  • Community: The trainee will practice creating and preparing music workshops for diverse target groups.
  • Leadership: The trainee will expand and strengthen their leadership skills to run music workshops in their own communities.

Trainee Profile:

  • Has affinity for music and music-making.
  • Has experience leading music workshops with groups.

Training of Trainers

An in-depth course to gain skills and experience in facilitating training for community music leaders based on Musicians without Borders’ principles and methodology.

Description: This course covers the skills and knowledge needed to train others in leading community music workshops. We will examine our training methodology in relation to the 5 principles: Safety, Inclusion, Equality, Creativity, and Quality. The course examines concepts related to nonviolence, trauma and self-care. We will practice facilitating training sessions that cover didactic, pedagogic and musical skills.

Duration: 36 hour course | 6 days

Dates: October 29-November 3, 2018

Location: Akoesticum, Ede, The Netherlands

Training of Trainers Details

Goals:

  • Principles: The trainee will gain practical skills in following the principles of Musicians without Borders as a trainer.
  • Methodology: The trainee will learn how to train others to connect the principles of Musicians without Borders and music activities.
  • Community: The trainee will learn how to train others to create and prepare music workshops for diverse target groups.
  • Leadership: The trainee will gain practical experience in leading and facilitating training sessions.

Trainee Profile:

  • Has affinity for music and music-making.
  • Has experience in leading music workshop with groups, also in conflict areas or with refugees.
  • Has the wish to provide training to other professionals and/or students based on the core principles of our work.
CONTACT

Musicians without Borders has partnered with CONTACT to run a two-week professional training program in community music leadership and conflict transformation. The training is open to participants who are active in their communities as musicians, workshop leaders, teachers, or social activists and who would like to further their knowledge of using music as a tool for peacebuilding and social change.
