In September and October the Rwandan youth leaders who graduated from our training program gave music workshops in three different centers, reaching out to another 170 vulnerable children. They visited Amharo in Kacyiru and Kagugu, Kigali, and in the beautiful center of the organization Ready for Reading, in Rwinkwavu, a 2-hour drive from Kigali. The youth leaders (Malkah, Ferdinand, Nadine, Augustin, Leontine, Regina, and Fils) joined by our fantastic drum teacher Jaymo, worked with a total of 170 children, from the age 2 to 18. Thank you Malka Shyaka, Ferdinand Niyibigira, Lucky Shuster, Habimana Augustin, Uteta Dado Esp Regiute, Chris Nicholson, Kana Yves, Drups Jaymo, and CHABHA - Children Affected By HIV/AIDS!
In July 2013, the graduated youth leaders of our Music Leadership Training Program initiated and carried out two more outreach days, in cooperation with CHABHA. The first location was Kicukiro, in a center run by Agape Organization, where Eric and Regina worked with more than 70 children and youth. The second was at Bumbogo (Amahoro Organization), where Jolie and Leontine sang and danced with 50 children and adults, ages 5-45. We would like again thank Nadine and Emile, two of the graduated youth leaders, for so successfully and professionally coordinating the outreach days and supporting the workshops.
This was the second outreach day in our program. This time Marie-Paul, Joseph, Nadine, Emile, and guitar teacher Yves, traveled to Kagugu to work with almost 100 children at the center of Amahoro Organization, one of CHABHA's partners. In May 2013, the graduated trainees from our program in 2012-2013, started the outreach program, where they visit centers across Rwanda to give music workshops, reaching hundreds of more children yearly. This was the first outreach day, organized together with Shalom Educating for Peace.
In collaboration with the Listening Revolution, led by NY-based composer and creator Keren Rosenbaum, we invited 800 children and their families to a fantastic event. The youth leaders in our program designed, built, and led the activities in the huge musical playground, where everyone participated, played, danced, drummed, sang, and painted! The listening playground was followed by the graduation ceremony of the youth leaders in our program, receiving their diplomas: they are now Certified Music Workshop Leaders. Rwanda Youth Music is a project by Musicians without Borders.
This was the last training week for the first group of Rwandan youth leaders trained by Musicians without Borders. Guided by Keren Rosenbaum, the youths were prepared to organize and run the final event where 800 children and their families came to participate in a huge musical playground.
