My Life: Rap Workshops with SOS Children’s Villages Italy

In March, MwB trainers Manu van Kersbergen and Guus van der Steen led rap workshops with unaccompanied refugee youth in Crotone, Italy in collaboration with SOS Children’s Villages Italy. Together, they wrote and performed their own rap: ‘My Life’, sharing their hopes for the future.

Lyrics:

I dream of the day I will see my family again,

but until that moment I will use my words and this pen to write down

and tell all I hope, one day it will no longer be a dream,

no longer?

Oh life oh life, be strong, hold on,

Face all the problems that come on your way,

Think fast, do fast, we need to work hard,

People in the streets with no place to stay.

I want to be a missionary, don’t be scared.

I want to fight for freedom for everybody, on this whole planet.

I hope you get it, my life was tough from its very first second.

That is why I’m here, don’t feel offended.

My life is like a present discover what’s inside.

We rap and unwrap it step into the light.

Speak, listen, whisper, scream.

Wake up, get up, shape your dream.

My life, my life, my life (x3)

My life is mine to live.

I’m talking about the war, the war.

When will finish? The war.

Thousands of people lost, the war.

Men, women, young people and children have seen their future destroyed, the war.

I cry, I feel bad, yes! I still cry the war, the war.

I am the King of … I never turn off, if you attack me I turn you off.

Everyone are silent and listen to the King of …

They say I’ll never succeed, but I’m on the road to success.

Where I go, people help me to do it.

Come and go, you have a squared sound.

The King of … who will stop you, in the Rap you are the best.

One, two, three, four. Rap is not a game.

My life is like a present discover what’s inside.

We rap and unwrap it step into the light.

Speak, listen, whisper, scream.

Wake up, get up, shape your dream.

My life, my life, my life (x3)

My life is mine to live.

It’s me, Solji, who do you take me for?!

I’m not anyone.

This child has grow up with intelligence

My life is like a present discover what’s inside.

We rap and unwrap it step into the light.
