Creative Connections
June 24, 2016   Europe

At the end of May, MwB trainer Danny Felsteiner Mekori returned to Northern Ireland to lead the third week of a four part training for local musicians in community music workshop leadership.

The week began with an intensive two day training for local musicians who graduated from the first year of our program, focusing on best practices in working with adolescents. The trainees immediately put these skills into practice on the second day, leading a music workshop comprised of singing, dancing and drumming with students from the NW Academy of English. The students themselves reported feeling happier, more confident and more connected to one another after the workshop.

Following the weekend, the ‘first year’ trainees dove into four days of training in creativity, through a series of exercises in movement, drumming and instrument making using found objects. On the penultimate day of the training, the trainees led of workshop for a group of children from Model Primary School. While its notable to mention that Model Primary is one of the few ethnically and religiously integrated schools in Derry-Londonderry, in addition to serving students with a variety of special needs, there was no need to raise the subject of the students’ differences that afternoon. The significance of that day was the shared opportunity to make music together.

Many trainees commented on the immediate benefits of the training, such as expanding their leadership skills and confidence, encouraging them to think on their feet, and to make their workshops more engaging and structured. Most importantly, the trainees all recognized the significance of learning from one another as a group, despite their different backgrounds.
