Music Bridge in the Second Line
June 18, 2015   Europe

As part of World Wide Music Day this Sunday, the Music Bridge trainees will collaborate with Second Line NI and Music City for a parade and music workshop.

Second Line NI is a jazz based music education program, which has been working to bring a unique form of inclusive street performance to Northern Ireland over the past three years. By using the New Orleans tradition of jazz parades (second lines), the barriers between audience and performer are blurred. The parade is known as a ‘free flow’ parade, meaning there is no special place to stand/walk (as you might see in a military parade). The Second Line will process through the streets of Derry-Londonderry followed by a short open music workshop session.

In preparation for the event, the trainees have decorated their own umbrella, showcasing community partners Culturlann Ui Chanain and Musicians without Borders as part of a celebration of community music making. Each group that participates in the Second Line parade decides as a collective what they want their umbrella to say about the work they do. In turn, the organisations keep their umbrellas with the knowledge that it is a permanent invitation to join in any second line that comes their way.

We applaud our trainees for participating in such an exciting and groundbreaking event!
