Music Across Cultures

Holland is a country with large refugee and migrant populations, some generations old and some recently arrived. Singing the Bridge (formerly “Alomtonen”) brings refugee, migrant, and native Dutch women together to learn each other’s folk songs. Singing the Bridge creates a safe, neutral space where women of different national, ethnic and social backgrounds can meet and share their unique heritage and traditions, relating to one another on equal terms. Started in refugee housing centers, the program now has expanded to include diverse neighborhoods in many Dutch cities.

This musical exchange supports and facilitates deeper understanding and respect. In cooperation with the Dutch national music organization Unisono, Singing the Bridge now also provides training for musicians who organize and lead international choirs.

Building and supporting intercultural, inter-religious and international choirs and musical ensembles (Pontanima, Mostar Sinfonietta, Mihira) lies at the heart of MwB’s mission. If we can sing together, we can live together.
