Pop/Rock School in Mitrovica

In Mitrovica, Kosovo, ethnic Albanians and Serbs live their lives divided almost entirely by the River Ibar - and by war. There is a Confidence Area – a neutral meeting ground – under United Nations protection. Within the Confidence Area, there is a cultural center. In that cultural center, MwB expects miracles to happen.

Together with Community Building Mitrovica (CBM), MwB is creating the Pop/Rock School Mitrovica to give all young aspiring musicians – Albanians and Serbs alike – a place to develop musicianship and musical careers. Mitrovica’s musical resources, both human and material, are greatly depleted. Developed out of local desire to rebuild musical traditions, the School will offer Mitrovica’s young musicians space, instruments, materials, and educational opportunities.

The location of the School within the Confidence Area – accessible to children of both communities – is unique and fundamental to the School’s mission. In the Balkans, music has been propagandized and nationalized for a long time. A place where musical talent – and partnerships – can develop free from political hindrance has not existed since 1999. The opportunity for young people to discover and express themselves through their own original music and words will help them transcend political and cultural hostility.
