Seminar
On May 24 - International Women’s Day for Peace and Disarmament - pioneering women peace activists and female musicians from the Balkan and Caucasus will come to Utrecht to share their experiences with peace building and reconciliation. In an exciting seminar, they will explore similarities and differences between the regions, as well as opportunities for co-operation to strengthen each other’s work for peace. The women will interact with the audience in lively debates and workshops, focusing on women’s contributions to peace and security, and the role that music can play in bringing divided peoples together. Guests of the seminar feature political and cultural activists with focus on dialogue and music. Read more about the seminar >

Concerts
Leading up to the seminar, Musicians without Borders will organize three unique concerts with the guest musicians in Haarlem and Alkmaar. On May 22 and 23, singers, musicians and ensembles from Bosnia and Georgia will perform together with world music groups LéLéMam and Mihira from the Netherlands.

Bosnia's Sevdah
Among the performers is singer Amira from Sarajevo. She has gained international recognition with her enchanting interpretation of ‘Sevdah’, Bosnia’s soul music. Amira will perform together with accordion player Merima Kljuco, with whom she recently recorded a CD.

Traditional Georgian Women Music
Another special guest is a capella ensemble Mzetamze from Tbilisi, Georgia. While Georgia is famous for its men’s choirs, Mzetamze specializes in recording and performing songs that are traditionally sung by women.

Friday evening May 22, the program offers a choice between a ‘Georgian Night’ in Alkmaar with Mzetamze and international women’s choir Mihira, and a ‘Bosnian Night’ in Haarlem with Bosnian musicians and a capella world music ensemble LéLéMam.

Saturday evening May 23 all musicians will perform together in a ‘fusion’ concert in Alkmaar.

Sunday May 24, the World Culture Center RASA in Utrecht will form the stage for inspiring stories, passionate debates, and beautiful music contributing to a seminar about the role of women in peace building and reconciliation.
