Ambassadors Shura Lipovsky, Merima Ključo in U.K. Holocaust Commemorative Event

On January 28, two Musicians without Borders Ambassadors performed at the National Holocaust Commemorative Event held in Newcastle-upon-Tyne, U.K. Vocalist Shura Lipovsky and accordionist Merima Ključo performed movingly during the stunning commemoration of all victims of genocide from Nazi Germany, to Cambodia, to Bosnia, and to Darfur.

To open the program, Shura sang her a cappella Volt Ich Gehaat Koich ("I wish I had the strength of body and soul; I wish I could run through the streets; I wish I could scream at the top of my lungs - peace, peace, peace!"). Midway through the event, performed without intermission, Shura and Mirima offered, La Benedicion de Madre ('Mother's Blessing') and a new work by the Modavian composer Yefim Chorny, Siz Finster in Gaz, searching for a future of hope even in the midst of the storm.

At the end of the deeply affecting presentation, a young girl who survived the massacres in Zimbabwe and a survivor of the Auschwitz extermination camp together lit a candle of memory and of hope. Summing up the message of tolerance and reconciliation, Sir Jonathon Sacks, Chief Rabbi of the United Hebrew Congregations of the Commonwealth spoke:

Our unity in Heaven is reflected in our diversity on Earth. If we can't life with difference, we can't live at all. At the heart of Evil is the dislike of the unlike. If we had nothing common, we could not communicate. If we had everything in common, we would have nothing to say.
