NBE Donates Radio 4 Prize Money
to MwB
The Netherlands Wind Ensemble, winner of the prestigious
Radio 4 Prize, has donated the prize money- EUR 5000- to
Musicians without Borders. In a special concert, broadcast
live from the Amsterdam Muziekgebouw on Sunday, 13 November,
NBE artistic director Bart Schneemann received the prize
from Maestro Edo de Waart and announced the donation to
MwB, handing over a symbolic 'check' to MwB director, Laura
Hassler.
Baraná and LéLé Mam
Two of MwB's musical ambassadors, the ensembles Baraná
and LéLé Mam, welcomed the audience with
pre-concert performances in the reception hall, and later
joined the NBE on stage for the concert finale.
NBE and MwB established 'Winds of Change',
a new Bosnian NBE-styled wind ensemble
NBE and MwB have collaborated since 2005. NBE musicians
worked with MwB to revitalize wind instrument education
and performance in Bosnia-Herzegovina, offering master
classes, coaching and musical instruments. The ensemble
travelled to Sarajevo in 2006 to perform with students
in the city's cultural festival. NBE and MwB then established
'Winds of Change', a new Bosnian NBE-styled wind ensemble.
In ethnically divided post-war Bosnia-Herzegovina, Winds
of Change brings young talent from all backgrounds together
to restore a multi-ethnic music culture. In 2008, the
NBE invited Winds of Change to Amsterdam, where the ensembles
performed together in the Amsterdam Concertgebouw.

In May 2011, the NBE extended a Middle East tour to include
several days on the West Bank, working with Palestinian
children and youth in MwB's music programs. The NBE visited
a refugee camp, offered workshops to children and performed
two concerts with young rappers and aspiring young musicians
from Silwan (East Jerusalem) and Bethlehem.

Musicians without Borders is proud and grateful for the
partnership with the Netherlands Wind Ensemble and looks
forward to continued cooperation. The donation will help
to support MwB's projects in the Balkans and the Middle
East.
